Culturally and Linguistically Diverse
One of Prime 1 Care’s core strengths is its commitment to providing genuinely culturally-specific understanding. Our team comprises individuals from diverse backgrounds, including the Middle East, Asia, Africa, and South America. Many of our team members are trained in working cross-culturally, empowering you to actively participate in your local community.
The National Ethnic Disability Alliance (NEDA) has brought attention to the discrimination that people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds may experience in their lives. Discrimination can come from both the wider community, based on race, and within their own cultural group, as well as the broader community, due to their disability.
The culturally and linguistically diverse population includes individuals who were born overseas or have Australian-born heritage with one or both parents or grandparents born overseas. This term encompasses people from countries where the primary language spoken is not English. CALD individuals may be migrants or newly arrived refugees and can belong to various age groups and family types. Notably, there is growing data suggesting that CALD communities are overrepresented in some areas of chronic disease.
At Prime 1 Care, our team of dedicated caretakers assists CALD individuals with disabilities in navigating the system. We guide you through NDIA assessment and identification, ensuring access to necessary support. We’ll aid in your plan development, service provision, and connecting you to essential resources.
People in the CALD community with disabilities face distinct difficulties, including:
- Language and communication barriers, which hinder access to essential services.
- Limited understanding both within and outside the CALD community regarding the complex needs, cultural backgrounds, and practices of CALD individuals living with disabilities.
- Disability stigma prevalent in some CALD communities.
- Misconception - some CALD people with disabilities may struggle to access services that would legally acknowledge and support their disability.
Prime 1 Care offers several ways to assist its CALD care recipients:
- We arrange ethnic festivals and events to help CALD care recipients engage and connect with others of similar cultural backgrounds.
- We assess English proficiency and offer language support or interpreters for effective communication with recipients.
- Our activities prioritize cultural sensitivity, beliefs of CALD care recipients, and foster belonging through community connections.
- We provide multilingual materials for enhanced accessibility and understanding of relevant information and resources.
- We utilize simple language and culturally relevant images for effective communication, recognizing the limitations of translation for certain words and phrases.
- We prioritize safe, inclusive environments that encourage physical and social activities, while respecting and valuing the cultural beliefs of our CALD care recipients.
