What Is Incontinence?

Incontinence is the involuntary loss of bladder or bowel control, ranging from occasional light leakage to complete loss of control. It is not a disease itself but a symptom of an underlying condition or physical change, such as weakened pelvic floor muscles, nerve damage, prostate issues, childbirth, ageing, or neurological conditions like stroke, multiple sclerosis or spinal cord injury.

Types of Incontinence

Stress incontinence: leakage during physical activity, coughing or sneezing, usually caused by weakened pelvic floor muscles.
Urge incontinence: a sudden, intense urge to urinate followed by involuntary leakage, often related to an overactive bladder.
Overflow incontinence: frequent or constant dribbling due to incomplete bladder emptying.
Functional incontinence: physical or cognitive impairments that prevent timely access to the toilet.
Mixed incontinence: a combination of stress and urge incontinence.
Bowel (faecal) incontinence: loss of bowel control, requiring specialised products and management approaches.

Continence Aids Scheme and NDIS Funding

Continence Aids Payment Scheme (CAPS): a Commonwealth scheme providing an annual payment to eligible Australians with permanent and severe incontinence who hold a Medicare card and meet clinical criteria. Prime 1 Care can help you determine your eligibility and support you through the application process.

NDIS Funding: NDIS participants with incontinence related to their disability can access funding for continence supplies under the Consumables budget within Core Supports. This can include pads, underwear, briefs, skin care products and bed protection. We work with plan-managed and self-managed participants to help you access what you need within your plan budget.

Clinical Continence Management Services

Effective incontinence management goes beyond products. Our registered nurses and continence advisors provide comprehensive assessment, including reviewing urinary and bowel function, identifying underlying causes, bladder and bowel diary analysis, and a functional and mobility assessment. From this, we develop a personalised continence management plan covering product recommendations, behavioural strategies, pelvic floor exercises and specialist referrals where needed.

We also provide education for participants and carers on the correct use of continence products, skin care routines, scheduled toileting and bladder retraining techniques, and pelvic floor exercises.

Working with Your Healthcare Team

Prime 1 Care does not prescribe medication. Where clinically appropriate, we work alongside your GP and specialists who may consider treatments such as medication for urge incontinence, pelvic floor physiotherapy, or other options including TENS therapy. Any medication or treatment decision is made by your treating doctor, not by Prime 1 Care.
