Understand the person and the context
Behaviour can communicate distress, an unmet need or a difficulty with the environment. Begin with the participant’s communication, preferences, routines and the situations in which support is required.
Implementation and specialist practice are different
Disability support workers may be involved in implementing an agreed behaviour support plan when they have the appropriate training and arrangements. Developing a specialist behaviour support plan requires an appropriately qualified and authorised practitioner. Confirm the roles of each provider.
Rights, safeguarding and restrictions
Any proposed restrictive practice requires the applicable authorisation, safeguards, reporting and oversight. Do not assume a worker or provider is authorised to use a restrictive practice. Discuss current plans and requirements through a secure referral process.
Assess before agreeing to support
Worker competency, the setting, risk, clinical input and escalation pathways need individual consideration. Prime 1 Care’s national team can review an enquiry and confirm whether suitable support is available.
