Start with the support and the plan
Identify the assistance required and read the relevant funding category and conditions in the participant’s current plan. Do not rely only on a provider’s description of a service.
Check flexibility instead of assuming it
Some budgets may allow choices within their rules, while stated supports or categories may have restrictions. Ask the NDIA or plan manager to clarify the funding available for a proposed service.
Consider support and skill development together
Practical assistance and skill-building can have different roles in someone’s life. Plan them around the participant’s needs and goals. There is no guarantee that taking part in a program will reduce future support costs or hours.
Use a clear service agreement
Confirm the scope, price, hours, cancellation arrangements and applicable funding before services begin. A support coordinator can assist with navigating services within the agreed scope of their role.
Official information
Use the latest official guidance and confirm what applies to the participant’s circumstances.
