Why families consider respite care

Planned respite is a conversation about the participant’s support and the sustainability of their usual care arrangements. The right option depends on individual circumstances.

Start with both the participant and their support network

Discuss the participant’s preferences, routines and the assistance they need, alongside the needs of family or informal carers. A short stay or temporary arrangement should be planned with the person receiving support.

Make the proposed service specific

Ask where support takes place, who provides it and what the price includes. Personal care, nursing, overnight support, meals, activities and transport should be discussed explicitly. Avoid assuming a package includes every requirement.

Consider continuity

Share the necessary routines and care instructions through an agreed information-sharing process. Ask how staff will communicate changes and what happens if a proposed arrangement cannot meet the person’s needs.

Confirm funding before booking

NDIS short-term accommodation or respite has specific requirements. A holiday, hotel stay or family break is not automatically funded. Check the current NDIS guidance and the participant’s own arrangements before committing to costs.

Ask about availability early

Give the preferred dates, region and broad support needs. There is no universal booking lead time and no automatic acceptance of an urgent request. Prime 1 Care’s website and general enquiries are not emergency services.

Official information

Use the latest official guidance and confirm what applies to the participant’s circumstances.
